A gentle, serene establishment with Japanese lanterns, woodwork and paintings and a windowed cafe up front. The name, derived from a flowering plant that blooms in Japan in all shapes and sizes, is reflected in the diverse menu. Oysters are served raw, deep-fried or baked, there are noodle hot pots, sublime sushi and sashimi, and various teriyakis and tempuras. The "royal Japonica" is truly spectacular, a half-broiled, half-steamed salmon filet laid on slices of orange, topped with salmon roe caviar and mint leaf. The clientele attracts upscale Asians and other sophisticates.
This place cooks up a Japanese cuisine with a menu based largely on sushi. Expect the average entrée to cost from $12 to $20, and you should go dressed casual.
