Pope John Paul and his 48-strong entourage of cardinals saw fit to dine at this genteel 37-year-old restaurant on a recent visit--a thrilling evening for the friendly, seasoned staff. The Church must be flush, since even a bowl of minestrone is $10. There`s leopard-print carpet, framed family portraits, huge floral arrangements, and exotically infused olive oils set out on a cart. The three levels include a private, chandeliered La Scala room and a wine cellar room on the third floor. Get a celestially priced bottle of reserve wine to go with the conventional, exalted fare of pastas, fish and meat dishes.
Go to Giambelli Fiftieth for a restaurant that concentrates on an Italian menu. Expect the average entrée to cost between $12 and $20, and dress casual.
