Decades ago, African-American jazz musicians denied service at segregated hotels found late-night snacks at Charlie`s, whose open-door had no lock because it never closed ¡ to anyone. Today, the smoke-free neighborhood joint does close, but it still serves heaping plates of the signature turkey hash and eggs, meatloaf, and French toast at great prices. Another old-time touch: strangers share tables.
