No chicken tikka or curried lamb here. Udupi Palace specializes in pure, vegetarian South Indian cuisine, and it`s a revelation to those who think "Indian food" means meat curries, tandoori, and masala dishes. The menu features several varieties of uttappam (savory rice flour pancakes) and the astonishing dosai (huge, thin crepes made of rice, lentil, and wheat and filled with anything from potatoes to chutney), which come to the table looking like delicately flattened flying saucers. This place is a must, even for those who prefer their Indian food meaty and familiar. A final word: don`t pass up the mango lassi.
Best known for their Masala Dosa, this place serves you Indian and American dishes an emphasis on vegetarian meals. Expect the average entrée to cost $8 to $12, and you should dress casual.
Atmosphere: The lighting is bright. The place is crowded and calm and typically attracts an ethnic crowd. Table talk is no problem - noise level here is moderate.
Eating & Drinking: Open for lunch and dinner.Alcohol is not served.
Of Interest: Masala Dosa, a traditional South Indian dish, is a crepe-style wrap (dosai) stuffed with a potato-onion filling. One can order either regular Masal Dosa or the Paper Dosa-style which comes as a dramatic presentation: tasty to-boot.
