This is one of the last true old time Market joints holding out bravely against the push to make every place cute. Tourists and locals alike line up on weekends and all summer long for the best view in the Market with friendly down home service thrown in. The telephone book size menu covers the usual family fare with some Greek and seafood dishes thrown in -- all at very moderate prices. During off peak hours the hipsters, tourists and old timers coexist amidst the stools, classic wood booths and hodgepodge decor culled from various decades. Breakfast is the strong point here, featuring blueberry pancakes, and homemade red flannel hash. At lunch and dinner you can get shad roe with bacon, the special Athenian steak sandwich, and sweet potato and turkey hash.
Athenian Inn serves patrons American dishes known for their seafood and steaks. Expect the average entrée to cost roughly $8 to $12, and you should usually go dressed casual.
