Opened in the 1960`s by Eli Schulman and recently spruced up by son Marc and widow Esther, Eli`s is a Chicago institution. The cozy dining room is lined with dark wood punctuated by white table cloths and peach lampshades. There`s a glass-enclosed, smoke-free atrium room and separate bar area with a few tables and a pianist. The politicians and stars (including President Clinton) don`t come for the decor, though, they come for the calf`s liver, the steak, the chops, and the cheesecake. In addition to the famous highlights, the menu includes shrimp, whitefish and comfort-dishes like chicken matzo-ball soup and chicken in a pot.
You`ll find that Eli`s The Place For Steak serves a Mexican and American cuisine an emphasis on steaks. Expect to pay in the range of $20 to $30 per person.
