If you are looking for a multicultural dining experience, with little emphasis on authentic Greek cuisine, by all means visit Yanni’s Greek Taverna. And, by the way, bring your own seasonings and spices. My wife and I recently dined at Yanni’s one Sunday afternoon following a visit to the special exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art. Our Greek salad was mostly lettuce that hid two black olives, two pieces of cucumber, and tidbits of green bell pepper. The oil & vinegar dressing contained no seasoning that we could discern and the usual dusting of oregano was conspicuously absent. My wife ordered the charbroiled rockfish, which was fresh, moist and perfectly cooked, but was missing any seasoning whatsoever. I ordered the charbroiled squid, which was also tender and moist, but lacked even the slightest hint of garlic let alone some salt and pepper. I summoned our waiter, whose name was Muhammad, and asked if the cook could add some garlic to the dish. He, in turn, proceeded to have a discussion with the cook, whose primary language was Spanish, regarding the need to add garlic to this particular dish. My squid was promptly returned sans garlic, however, it was now liberally coated with paprika. Hungarian calamari anyone? Now don’t get us wrong, it’s not that we are against multiculturalism, but both my wife and I agreed that Yanni’s needs a Zorba or two in their employ.
