My partner and I were underwhelmed and somewhat irritated by our experience at Striped Bass on 1 July 2006. The evening began with a demonstration outside the restaurant protesting the fact that Striped Bass serves foie gras. When we entered the restaurant, the host made a disparaging remark about the demonstrators, to which I responded that I agreed with them that Striped Bass shouldn't be serving foie gras. The host then rolled his eyes at me and walked away! In retrospect we should have canceled our reservation and left, but we were seated and ordered. Our waiter then turned around and recommended the foie gras! He encouraged us to ask questions, but he couldn't answer some questions. When we ordered wine we were handed over to a garrulous sommelier who spent half the time talking about her ailments and the "voices in her head" (I'm not making this up). One of her voices did make a decent wine recommendation. The appetizers were inventive and interesting, but lacked any compelling tastes or flavors. The entrees were quite subtle and complex in their ingredients, and were the best part of the evening. I nevertheless have to second another reviewer's comment that the portions were quite small, given that my HALIBUT was $37! Still the preparation was quite inventive and memorable. Dessert -- a chocolate tart served with an absolutely flavorless mousse or ice cream --was good but not great. The pastry chef did acknowlegde our anniversary, which we were celebrating, by inscribing "Happy Anniversary" on the dessert plate with chocoloate sauce. We appreciated the gesture, but it didn't fully nake up for the host's rudeness or our waiter's lack of familiarity with the menu. One final comment: the place needs a good dusting. The sides of the columns around the center of the dining room and the bottm rungs of the chairs were coated with a fairly thick and conspicuous layer of dust. -- 7/4/2006 1:58:35 PM
