My wife and I had dinner here May 2, 2006 and it was a wonderful experience. We both had a glass of the excellent house `sparkling wine`/champagne and then for appetizers she had coquilles st jacques and I had cold calves brains with vinagrette sauce, capers, cucumber and sliced tomato. The brains were fresh and creamy and the sauce delicious. My wife truly enjoyed the scallops and mushrooms which were drowned in a rich, creamy sauce. She says she will definitely order them when we go back. Appetizers were followed by a fresh, crisp assorted green salad that provided a pleasing interlude - though we partook sparingly in anticipation of our entrees. Her rack of lamb cut into tender, succulent chops with pommes frites and my kidneys in red wine sauce with rice arrived piping hot from the kitchen both accompanied by baby carrots, spears of asparagus and a tasty, small amount of pickled red cabbage which provided a surprising and piquent contrast. I enjoyed a glass of the house cote du rhone with my entree. For dessert we shared a wonderfully smooth and delicious mousse au chocolat and I had a cup of espresso which was as mellow as any I have ever had. Desserts that passed us on the way to other customers' tables looked fabulous. The waiter was very friendly and efficient even as he told us the history of the restaurant: first `continental` restaurant on the Virginia side of the river, opened in the 1960s. The atmosphere was quiet, casual, old-fashioned bistro style; other diners included obvious regulars and couples celebrating birthdays or anniversaries or on dates. On the night we were there, a Monday, they offered an excellent prix fixe menu with a large number of entree choices which includes a bottle of wine for only $24.95! We will definitely visit Chez Andrees the next time we are in the D.C. area. By way of reference, our check for food and wine was about $90.
