  VISITOR REVIEW

Visiting from the Bay Area and planning a date with my husband I asked around for the best sushi place in DC; consensus among our friends was that Makoto was THE game in town. I called immediately and got reservations for Thu 8:30pm. The place was 2/3 empty, but were asked to sit at the bar. Perfectly fine; sushi bar is our preference when looking for a unique gastronomic experience like the one we were about to have. We both got the $49-sample menu but while waiting ordered some dry sake, beer and a pair of Uni pieces. A few minutes later the westernized-geisha-like waitress told us that they just had a cancellation and that a table had freed if we wanted to move. We politely declined and stayed put enjoying the view which rapidly became depressing; the old-man behind the counter never cracked a smile, or made eye contact but kept shouting commands to the two waitresses over our heads… The first dish came: disappointing, unexciting.

Overall, the ambiance is unnecessary formal; the place feels stiff and the service border line friendly. The unsociable chef behind the bar is a bit of a turn off, I felt pushed to order my second sake too early into the sample-meal; the waitress kept poring beer on glasses we had barely touched; we had to order out tea twice before getting the beverage. The samples (and really it's all that is, samples) came in one after the other, slowly in the beginning and at a much accelerated pace (to the point of feeling rushed) at the end. All 8 courses were unremarkable – except for the 2 sushi/sashimi dishes (for an additional $15 you can get 5 tiny pieces of yellow tail instead of the chefs selection, which bring the sample menu to $64!).

Not worth more that a stars and it goes the sushi chef, Takashi Okamura, who is the only reason to go to Makoto; his choice of sashimi and sushi pieces were perfect in cut and size, his presentation impeccable. The check was $220 for two which would have been very reasonable if only the experience had been up to expectation. Clearly overrated.
