Anyone who has been wine tasting 100 miles from the evening restaurant has no comprehension of where they are or what they are eating- Is follow up to post by flimflammed ...
I want you to know that everything bad you
heard about Bakersfield is true. Really true.
Case in point, yesterday I was informed that
Bakersfield was home to the largest Basque
population in the US and that we had to eat
Basque food in Bakersfield. I had friends
research and recommmend a fine Basque
restuarant. All came back with the same
recommendation -- "go to Wool Growers"
which sounds like a breeding ground for
prostitutes. If only we could have been so
lucky.
After a full day of drinking wine in Paso
Robles, we went back and prepared for dinner.
Plenty of bourbon and wine later, we made our
reservation at Wool Growers with our special
wine in hand. I'm confident that we were there
only people drinking wine in the
establishment. It could have been any
restaurant in Minot, ND. Evidently, Basque
food means pick your standard meat dish and
they will add 5-6 side disheds including spicy
fries. The place was packed, but only with
oilfield workers. We ended up leaving Wool
Growers and its plastic sheep and went to an
equally tacky "Stuart Anderson's Black Angus"
restaurant where we purchased friendly fried
food, grilled beef and a cut of donkey. Safe
bets in Bakersfield.
