If you ever find yourself in Bakersfield in the evening looking for a restaurant I recommend a French/Basque restaurant called Benji’s located on Rosedale Highway( SR 58) about three to four traffic lights, west of Highway 99. We got there about 6:30 and a lot of people were already showing up. We happen to get seated right away, but by 7pm the place was mobbed with customers. As we dove into our dinner we found out why. The food is just great and plenty of it. There are plenty of main course selections to please anyone and with it you get what they call the “Set Up “. The Set Up is almost a meal in itself and consisted of: a) Bread and butter with a great tasting, but deceiving, Salsa - it goes down like a Rotor Rooter; b) a dish of great tasting hot beans; c) a dish of sliced tomatoes garnished with red onions, and a bowl of mixed green salad all covered in a great tasting salad dressing; a dish of beef tongue; one bowl of Cabbage soup and one bowl of Clam Chowder soup to feed all four of us – all having excellent flavor. For the main course we all had different things and each one was excellent food. Needless to say, we didn’t make it to the desserts, but I am sure it would have been an offer with nothing to complain about. The bill came to about $ 19 - 20 per person but worth it.
