Upon entering Rock Lobster, we were asked for a ten-dollar cover fee. In exchange for the cover, we got vouchers to credit the $10 towards each of our meals. When we made our food orders, the waitress accepted the three $10 vouchers and confirmed that the vouchers would be used to deduct $10 from each of our orders. However, at the end of our dinner, she informed us that she had made a mistake regarding the fact that the $10 was only to be deducted if a person ordered an entrée. Since one of us had ordered the combination of crab salad, mussels, and onion rings rather than an “official” entrée, she said that she could only deduct two vouchers from our meals instead of all three.

We found it unfair that both the greeter and the waitress had led us to believe that the vouchers were good towards our dinners, and that we were to be penalized for their mistake of not knowing what menu items could or could not be used with the vouchers,. Thus, we spoke with Manager Susan Arnold.

When we explained the situation, she condescendingly told us that we needed to learn how to read the vouchers; she had never had an interpretation problem with any other customers; the crab on the salad was worth more than the $4 she would receive if she deducted the $10 voucher from the $14 price of the crab salad; that her computer system could not handle deducting the additional $10 voucher to further credit our bill; and that the $10 cover fee paid when entering Rock Lobster was needed to pay for the band playing there that evening.

It seemed to us that Ms. Arnold made various invalid excuses for keeping the $10. It is not the amount of cash that we argued over, but rather the principle of being treated fairly as a customer. However, she was absolutely adamant about keeping the $10, so we simply paid the bill and left without further argument, feeling deceived over having to pay the $10 cover fee and cheated on what we ended up paying for the overall cost of our dinner meals.
