We ordered take-away from Emperor's Choice on Mother's Day to bring to the Northwest Side. The person on the phone was most accommodating, as we lacked a proper menu and ordered from the info found on the Web. She unbegrudgingly described to us an item we were unfamiliar with. We stuck with some Cantonese stand-bys -- sweet & sour pork/chicken, shrimp chop suey. We also got a chicken & black mushroom dish, along with pot stickers. After having arrived on the other end of town with the goods, they were still piping hot. Both sweet & sour dishes were exemplary and abundant, the sauce untainted by artificial color and brimming with pineapple chunks, tomato and bell pepper. The pork could have been a bit less gristly, but this was a mere trifle. Everything was fresh, delicious and satisfying -- even the shrimp chop suey, a dish of humble culinary pedigree, was better than it had to be, brimming with fresh veggies and shrimp. The chicken & black mushrooms contained huge mushroom caps, tender baked chicken breast pieces and was in a light yet tasty brown sauce -- ideal for health-conscious diners. On a past dine-in visit, I had enjoyed their scallops stuffed with shrimp -- marvelous and very fresh for the landlocked Midwest. It has been said that Emperor's Choice is a choice spot for Chinese-style seafood in Chicago. It's not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for, which ends up being a good value nonetheless as well as a worthwhile dining experience. If there is better Cantonese/Hong Kong-style cuisine in Chicago, I've yet to find it.
