Wonderfully fresh and tender cuts of sashimi in large portions, amazing fresh water eel, and an exquisite spicy mayonaise sauce make Yama one of my favorite restaurants in New York. Yes, the restaurant is small, but I like the cozy atmosphere. I know they don't take reservations, but here are two suggestions to avoid long waits: 1) try going at 5:30pm when they start serving dinner if you can (it's virtually empty then, but fills up quickly within the next half hour) 2) there is another branch on Carmine Street which is just as good, is less crowded, and takes reservations (avoid the one on Houston Street as the sushi is not on par with the other two sites). Oh, and FYI, the Yama at Irving Place is closed on Mondays.
