Won Kow is a traditional Chinatown restaurant with an illustrious past. I was introduced to Won Kow by a friend, and I was somewhat dubious as I have found that most Chinatown restaurants offer uninspired fare catering to the tastes of the bland provincial midwesterner. I was however quite surprised by Won Kow. While the menu is frought with hits and misses, there are a few that I can recommend. The Hunan beef is excellent, piquant crispy, sweet and spicy. The Honey Walnut Shrimp is about the most unique chinese dish I have had. It is a cream based sauce served with candied walnuts, and is excellent. Their beef chow fun is perfect, but stick with the beef, the other meats (chicken, pork)ruin the flavor of the dish. Wonderful potstickers and real crab rangoon with crab not cream cheese. The wait staff is extremely friendly if not well versed in english. The place does look a bit tired, but that is the essence of Chinatown, isn't it? P.S. They have a good (although standard) selection of dim sum for lunch, prices are low to moderate. It is definitely better than your standard chinatown fare (but places like Papajin on milwaukee or Dee's in L.P. have a fresher more modern edge).
