I have lived in Hacienda Heights for over 25 years, and I just now have discovered this nice little Japanese restaurant. It's as if I had struck gold. Akasaka is sanwiched inbetween the industrial and residential areas, you would not have guessed there is a nice restaurant there. On the outside, you'd think the building is someone's home, with a rough, loose gravel driveway en closed in chainlink fencing. Walking into the building, you may be greeted with a simple smile and wave by one or two of the chefs taking a break in the patio. As soon as you walk into the restaurant, you will find the interior very inviting to all your senses. Only a few tables dot their small dining area, to your left a sushi bar fits about ten people, and a couple of party rooms complete the dining area. The food at Akasaka is great. Of course, the only thing I have eaten is their sushi (they have a wide arrange of entrees typical to Japanese cuisine), it is among the freshest sushi I have ever eaten. In particular, the Yellowtail sashimi practically melted in my mouth. The spider roll (soft-shelled crab) is delicious, although each piece is rather large to bite into. I did order an excellent appetizer: baked scallops. This is prepared with mayonnaise, baked in a beautiful large shell plate and topped with smelt eggs and nori (dried seaweed). You may find daily specials posted on the wall, which sound very apetizing, but I have yet to taste these. Your order will be accompanied by a small salad and miso soup, and completed with an orange slice. My partner and I were very satisfied with our meal and paid a bill of about $50 for the two of us. This may seem rather steep for some, I assure you that the sushi is worth every penny. Upon exiting the restaurant you will be returned to the real world among the industrial warehouses, but your visit will not end but with a simple smile and wave by a gracious chef taking a break in the patio.
