Peter Vasquez is a relentlessly creative chef. His culinary repertoire circles the globe, from lovely French bistro classics and perfect French haute cuisine to the spicy cuisines of India, Spain, Thailand and Latin America. Yet he is most definitely not a fusion chef. No, for Vasquez respects a cuisine for its unique flavors, and if he tweaks the traditions a bit it's only because the aim is to magnify the tastes of the cuisine. Try his Indian-style curried lamb shank, with condiments and homemade Indian flatbreads, or check out the chef's enthusiasm as he discusses his plans to cure his own prosciutto. This is a man on a mission!
My favorite aspect of the menu is the staggering cheese list, which now features 27 cheeses, and each one is matched to a unique accompaniment! Marisol also serves tapas in the aftenoons from 5-7, with over twenty selections.
Marisol's front-of-the-house is operated by Pete's wife, Janis. The room is a deep shade of yellow, festooned with murals of nodding sunflowers, while the lovely patio is one of New Orleans' prettiest alfresco venues.
The Sunday brunch features the music of Walter "Snapbean" Payton, the father of trumpet legend Nicholas Payton. All in all, Marisol is one of the most original restaurants to appear in New Orleans in years and years.
