There are many dishes that have come to symbolize New Orleans cuisine: shrimp remoulade, trout menieure, Bananas Foster, and bread pudding with whisky sauce to name but a few. Some local restaurants have developed signature dishes that are copied, yet never as good as the original, such as the famous Oysters Rockefeller at Antoine's. Well, I'm about to let you in on the dish that's the best kept secret in New Orleans.
The charbroiled oysters at Drago's, in Metairie's Fat City district, are the real deal. I could go on and on about these oysters, and the way they are roasted over a hot grill, then broiled under intense heat to capture the medley of garlic, parsley and sharp grated cheese, but let's keep it simple. Drago's charbroiled oysters are simply amazing. Quite possibly, these oysters are the single best dish in a food-crazed city!
Drago's does serve other dishes, don't get me wrong. They have lobsters of every size, flown in directly from Maine and Nova Scotia, at very reasonable prices. The Shrimp Ruth is a great appetizer in the summer when its parmesan-crusted tomatoes are at a peak. There are even some dishes without seafood that are fine, and the pasta dishes are created with care. Their tequila shrimp deserve much praise, too. All the other hallmarks of a terrific family owned restaurant are evident at Drago's: friendly service, cleanliness, ample portions, and food from the heart. Still, I can just about guaranteee that oyster lovers will want more than a dozen of those charbroiled beauties. They are all that, and then some.
Drago's can also host banquets of practically any size. They can craft a menu to fit price ranges for most private functions. However, I noticed last time I was there that somebody couldn't wait that long. Their luggage from the airport was stowed because these connoisseurs of New Orleans seafood knew that the good times roll when you taste your first charbroiled oysters at Drago's Seafood Restaurant. Sounds like a plan to me!
