The weekend evening we were there....there was a 45 minute wait for "next available seating" for two. It stretched to an hour and 15 minutes spent at the cold noisy bar with televisions tuned to different channels and snacks too far away to sample. I should have known ... but we were finally seated in the dining room closest to the water and was still hopeful.
The waiter was helpful and seemed menu-knowledgeable. A crock of oyster crackers and horseradish is on each table. Wonderful warm corn muffins and Portuguese rolls were brought out. Our appetizer choices were delicious....Oysters on the half-shell from Canada at $7.95 were superb. Clean and chilled. The "Classic French Onion Soup" was hot, cheesy, a hint of garlic, and not overly salty; $3.50. The go-with salads were a mix of pre-mix and fresh and served timely.
Entrees were disappointing. The "Second Mate", a broiled combination platter of lobster, shrimp, scallops and deviled clam, crabcake, and flounder was not worth the $26.95 price tag. All but the lobster was over-cooked. It is difficult to broil such a diverse combination of sizes and get all to be perfect. But I had hoped!
Choice of potato and veggie ... I went with baked sweet potato with brown sugar and butter and the standard Cole slaw -- both were adequate. Only the lobster was eaten. Veal Parmigiana for my non-seafood eating partner was tender but overly breaded; $15.50. The portion sizes are very ample. Desserts are all of the frozen commercial variety.
Mmmmm ... for such a well-known and well established local eatery, this Dining Diva was disappointed.
